House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) intends to introduce legislation that would fully fund President Trump’s wall along the southern border of the US.
McCarthy is expected to call for full wall funding, alongside other enforcement measures, already approved in the House. McCarthy is looking to drum up support among the GOP's rank and file.
McCarthy plans to travel to the border in the next few days.
Introducing this bill positions McCarthy to fill Paul Ryan’s post as speaker when Ryan vacates his seat in January. McCarthy would be competing against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for speaker.
Fox News points out that “if the House passes McCarthy’s bill, it will have to make its way through the Senate, where it will need 60 votes to avoid a filibuster hurdle before January.” If that’s the case, then the bill would be voted on in 2019.
